Dr. Petros Zezos

Dr. Petros Zezos, MD, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM U). He is a gastroenterologist at TIDHI, specializing in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Additionally, he is affiliated with the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC).
 

He completed his medical education in 1990 and his gastroenterology training in 2000 at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He received his PhD in 2005 from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, focusing on hypercoagulation in IBD and investigating the role of low molecular weight heparin in treating ulcerative colitis.

In 2011, he received the FEBGH Diploma and Fellowship from the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). In 2012, he completed an MSc in HPB Surgery at Democritus University of Thrace, Greece.
 

Dr. Zezos served as a Staff Gastroenterologist in the Hellenic Armed Forces and was Head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Divisions at Military Hospitals in Greece prior to relocating to Toronto, Canada in 2013.
 

He completed a clinical IBD fellowship at Sunnybrook Hospital (2014-2015) and an advanced clinical IBD fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital (2015-2018) in Toronto. Additionally, he completed the 2-year Master Teacher Program of the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto (2016-2018).
 

At NOSM University, Dr. Zezos is engaged in teaching activities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has delivered lectures and presentations to his colleagues in Thunder Bay. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and has presented at international conferences.
 

His clinical and research interests encompass monitoring the outcomes of biological treatments in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), identifying predictors of disease-related outcomes in IBD, evaluating surveillance methods for colorectal neoplasia in IBD, and assessing the endoscopic severity of IBD using artificial intelligence models. Additionally, he conducts research on the epidemiology of IBD and gastrointestinal bleeding outcomes in Northwestern Ontario. Furthermore, he participates in collaborative research studies on IBD with other centres across Canada.
